WILMINGTON, Del. — Civil rights attorney and candidate for Delaware Attorney General Dwayne Bensing is standing with the Delaware NAACP in their call for transparency, accountability, and an independent investigation into the police killing of 19-year-old Kadir Skinner in Wilmington last week. Bensing released the following statement:
“Delaware’s criminal legal system is broken. From Jeremy McDole to Rodney Robinson to Lymond Moses, and now to Kadir Skinner. Too often, our state’s top prosecutor tells grieving families that a fatal shooting was unjust - but lawful; protecting a broken and racist system while our communities are left bleeding in the streets.
“Out of the dozens of police shootings and civilian deaths investigated by Attorney General Kathy Jennings, her office has not found criminal wrongdoing by police officers in any of them. That destroys public trust and leaves a cloud of suspicion over the vast majority of our honorable police officers, who strive to do things the right way.
“I stand with the Delaware NAACP in calling for full transparency, an independent investigation, and meaningful accountability into Kadir Skinner’s death. My thoughts are with the Skinner family, who deserve answers and accountability. Delawareans need and deserve independent oversight that holds wrongdoers accountable, protects the innocent, and restores trust. That’s how we can transform our broken criminal legal system into a genuine criminal justice system.”
